Raby Castle
near Staindrop, Durham - Duke of Cleveland
"This splendid edifice has in part continued from Anglo-Saxon times, but it was
principally erected in 1379 by John de Neville, with whose descendants it continued, until
Charles Neville, sixth and last Earl of Westmoreland engaged in a conspiracy
against Queen Elizabeth. His immense estates were forfeited, and in the reign
of James the First the castle of Raby was purchased by Sir Henry Vane.
His grandson, Sir Christopher Vane, was created Baron Barnard, and his descendant,
Hnery, Lord Barnard, was elevated to Earl of Darlington; and again his grandson,
William Henry, was elevated in 1833 to the Dukedom of Cleveland."
